Digital Empowerment of the Under-Resourced Languages through Mobile and AI Technologies

Community-led tools for preservation, learning, and translation.!

We build offline-first mobile tools and low-resource AI to bring under-resourced languages into the digital world, starting with the Fur language (Darfur, Sudan). The goal is to support preservation, learning, and translation in education, healthcare, humanitarian communication, and cultural continuity.

We are building two core components. The first is an offline dictionary and learning app that works without reliable internet. It includes a searchable word bank with phonetic support, audio pronunciations recorded by native speakers, example phrases for real-life use, and simple learning features such as favorites, history, flashcards, and quizzes. The second is a real-time text and voice translator for typed and spoken communication when interpreters are unavailable. It supports bi-directional text translation, voice translation (speech recognition and speech synthesis), and human feedback to improve quality over time.

We work with communities to co-create high-quality language data through recording, transcription, and translation, and we fine-tune multilingual models for mobile deployment. We follow privacy-by-design practices and rely on consent-based data collection, using open standards where possible to support research and future language expansion.

Starting with Fur as a pilot, the platform will expand to other under-resourced languages in Sudan and across Africa over time, with added literacy content and improved speech technology.
